The Law of Inclusion

A church's effectiveness in evangelism-disciple making is directly proportional to its ability to establish and cultivate meaningful relationships.

The Law of Inclusion says:
A disciple-making church intentionally provides a process that includes people in its shpere of care, causing them to desire to become believers, establishing a relationship with Jesus Christ and His body, the local church. They make a commitment to membership.

Base One Value:

Every person has the right to a presentation of the gospel at his level of understanding.

Base One Principles:

  • The timeless message of the Bible is the answer to human need. Psalm 19:8
  • The priority of Christ and His Church is the salvation of each individual. Luke 19:10; Matthew 28:19, 20
  • We influence first by our character and caring, then by what we communicate. Mark 6:33, 34

Four habits characterize the church committed to include people and to act on its convictions. (This outline is developed in the We Build People Training Book.)

Goals of Disciples Committed to Membership

How do we know when an individual has committed to membership and that the church is effectively practicing the Law of Inclusion? At Base 1 true disciples should reflect the following awarenesses, attitudes, and actions in their lives.

Awareness Goals - they know:

  1. what sin is and why people need a Savior;
  2. that they can be saved by repenting of sin and receiving Christ as Savior and Lord;
  3. that the Church is Christ's body and is compelled to fulfill the threefold mission of worship, edification, and evangelism;
  4. that the Church is the family of God and that each believer is vital to the Church's mission;
  5. that the Bible is the infallible, unique written revelation of God to humankind.

Attitude Goals - their attitudes reflect:

  1. a realization that they are sinners;
  2. godly sorrow for sin and a desire to accept God's gift of salvation;
  3. a desire to symbolize conversion through water baptism;
  4. a recognition of the value of Christian fellowship;
  5. a respect for the divinely inspired, infallible Word of God.

Action Goals - they take action and:

  1. come to God seeking forgiveness;
  2. turn from sin in repentance;
  3. testify of their conversion through water baptism;
  4. consistently join the fellowship of believers;
  5. use the Bible to investigate claims concerning Christian faith.
