How People Become Disciples

Jesus said...

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

-- Matthew 28:19-20

Effective churches focus on building disciples more than attracting a crowd. Don't focus on building a big church, focus on building people!

Effective churches provide a process in which people learn and grow together in a context of accountability, loving relationships, and practical application of God's Word. If any of these components are lacking then the potential of people becoming true disciples decreases.

Discipling is the intentional development of people into Christian disciples through...

  • accountability
  • loving relationships and
  • practical application of God's Word

Discipleship cannot be assumed to just happen. Just because the church offers a variety of activities and events doesn't mean that the church is making disciples. We have conditioned people to believe that a disciple is one who faithfully participates in certain events rather than one who reflects the character, values, and life-style of Christ.

When we define a disciple as one who is faithful to our events, then we get spectators. When we define a disciple as one who is a learner and follower of Christ who reflects His values and character and is actively seeking to reproduce that pattern in others, we build disciples.

A Christian Disciple is a learner and follower of Jesus Christ who reflects His teaching and lifestyle and is actively reproducing that pattern in others.
